Gilbert Speaks on Soccer and Benevento Calcio

21 Sep

I know nothing about the game of soccer other than having watched my grandsons play this game for their school’s team many years ago. I’m not really a sports fan and never played sports due to the fact that I can barely walk and chew gum at the same time, but two things happened over the summer to make me a soccer fan. What is the Benevento Calcio? Find out after the jump. Continue reading

Traveling to Italy with Ricky, Ricky, Ricky Part 3

17 Sep

This is the final addition to my story about visiting Benevento, Amalfi and Capri with my family. My ninety-one-year-old Uncle Mario was still complaining about his lost luggage depending on what he was missing at that moment be it his special razor, binoculars, or toenail trimmer. Ricky’s name was, by now, known all over the Amalfi coast because that’s all my cousins, me, and most of our neighbors would hear whenever my uncle needed anything. “Where’s Ricky?”

Calling on Ricky, Ricky, Ricky for everything had become the norm, and we understood this. Hey, the guy is ninety-one and he was brave enough to go on this trip…plus the airport did lose his suitcase…but Ricky did find a way to disappear if only for a few hours with some hiking and a scooter ride down the coasts. What treasures did Pompeii and Capri offer us before our trip home? Find out after the jump. Continue reading

I had to wait until I was seventy-years-young to go on my first overseas vacation. But, who would ever have guessed that I would return to Italy within the year. My first trip was a Leisurely Tuscany Tour with Starr Tour. The second trip was to Benevento and Amalfi with family. Although I truly enjoyed and recommended the first to my friends and family…it was the trip with my family that was the most special. Did my family and I enjoy Amalfi? Did Ricky survive the trip? Am I looking forward to trip#3? Find out after the jump. Continue reading

Yes, I know. It’s a strange title for a blog about my journey to the land of my roots, but I promise the title will make sense before you’re done reading this blog. My mother and her siblings were born and raised in Benevento Italy. My mother never made it back there to visit, and neither did my Uncle Mario or Aunt Anna…but that all changed this year. My uncle, who is a spry ninety-one-years-old man, decided that it was now or never if he were to see the house that he was born in. His son, daughter-in-law, granddaughter and I went with him…but we weren’t alone. We took a few ghosts with us. What’s it like for a psychic to reconnect with her history? Grab your passport and meet me after the jump. Continue reading
