Gilbert Speaks on “Los Espookys”

There is a new American comedy on HBO, and it is definitely worth watching. Los Espookys follows a group of friends who turn their love for horror into an enterprising business. They create and provide horror for those willing to pay for it. It’s a little bit of Seinfeld meets The Exorcist.

There is a lot of action packed into this half-hour series starring Bernardo Velasco, Fred Armisen, Ana Fabrega, Julio Torres (who also writes and co-stars). The series revolves around a group of young adults encouraged by Renaldo (Bernardo Velasco) to make a living staging fake supernatural events. Their first gig is a horror themed Quinceanera. Their second gig is for a priest who was attending the event. The priest needs to regain his position in the parish, which was lost when a younger and more hip priest arrived. Father hires the team to fake an exorcism.

The friends are uniquely funny in their own way. Renaldo is the lead character, with Ursula (Cassandra Ciangherotti) playing a dentist who refuses to smile. Tati (Fabrega) is more like Kramer in that she is living in her own little wacky world, and the most interesting of the characters is Andres (Torres) who is an orphan with a mysterious past, but thanks to his adoptive family, is in line to inherit a chocolate fortune.

This primarily Spanish-language with English subtitles comedy takes place in some Latin American country (I’m not sure where) but you are drawn immediately to the hilarious antics of the group of horror loving friends.

Fred Armisen plays Tito, Renaldo’s beloved uncle who is happy living his dream as a parking-valet legend in LA. You really need to watch this show. It comes on every Friday night at 11:00 p.m. on HBO.
