Gilbert Speaks on “Dead to Me” S01

There is a new TV series on Netflix, and if you like dark comedy, then you need the first season of Dead to Me. Secrets can damage the best of friendships, but when a secret concerns murder, then expect the unexpected.

Dead to Me, produced by Liz Feldman, Will Ferrell, and Adam McKay, stars Christina Applegate as the grieving widow Jen Harding, and Linda Cardellini as Judy Hale, a new found friend from a grief support group.

Jen is a real estate agent with a dead husband. A hit-and-run driver killed her husband. Jen and her two sons, Charlie (Sam McCarthy) and Henry (Luke Roessler) are trying to deal with the loss. Jen, who has anger issues on a good day, is driving her poor business partner Christopher (Max Jenkins) crazy with her inappropriate outbursts during house showings. It’s not good for business.

Things get really strange when Judy Hale befriends Jen at one of the grief sessions. Judy tells everyone that her fiancé is dead, but that is only the first of many lies. After Jen and Judy become good friends, Jen allows Judy to stay in her guesthouse until she can find an apartment. Jen finds out that Judy’s fiancé, Steve (James Marsden) is still very much alive, but Judy has an explanation. Steve kicked her out after her fifth miscarriage.

Judy and Steve are hiding an even bigger secret, and although Jen harasses the local law every day over finding her husband’s killers, the answer to the mystery is right under her nose.

This series has enough funny moments to allow us to move past Jen’s inability to put her life back together. Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini are a pure joy to watch as their characters move through a macabre dance as they tackle grief, guilt and murder
