Gilbert Speaks On “A Psychic/Medium’s Review of Personal Shopper”

ps

I’ve been seeing dead people since I was a toddler. This ability/gift runs on both sides of the family. My mother and father inherited their gifts from their mothers. When I watch films that deal with the afterlife, I pay careful attention to how the directors portray the mechanics of a haunting. I recently watched a ghost story called Personal Shopper. Did the film successfully replicate what mediums really experience? Find out after the jump.

Plot

Personal Shopper is a 2016 English/French psychological thriller. That’s how it is listed, but in reality, it is a study on ghost encounters. The film which was written and directed by Olivier Assayas, and stars: Kristen Stewart; Ty Olwin; Lars Eidinger; Sigrid Bouaziz; Anders Danielsen; and Nora von Waldstatten, is about the loss of a sibling and how his twin tries to reconnect with him in the afterlife.

Maureen (Kristen Stewart) is dealing with her brother’s unexpected death. They were very close as twins are apt to be, but they also shared the same psychic abilities. They were able to communicate with the dead. Lewis, who was a more powerful Medium, had made a deal with Maureen: whoever died first, would contact the other sibling. As fate would have it, both Lewis and Maureen suffered from the same genetic heart problem. Although Maureen keeps all her doctor appointment, there is no guarantee for longevity. It is evident throughout the film that Maureen is afraid that she will meet the same fate as Lewis…and yet, she smokes heavily.

Although Maureen’s boyfriend Gary (Ty Olwin) keeps asking Maureen to join him in Oman, she hesitates because she is working for a famous celebrity, Kyra (Nora von Waldstatten). Maureen does all the shopping for Kyra’s photo shoots which take Maureen on many jaunts through Europe to find the most beautiful clothing and jewels. I want a job like that.

Maureen is also helping Lewis’s fiancée, Laura (Sigrid Bouaziz) to sell his house. The people buying the house suspect that it is haunted. Is it the spirit of Lewis, or is there more than one spirit there. While the ghost investigation is going on we meet Ingo (Lars Eidinger), one of Kyra’s lovers. He tells Maureen that he knows that Kyra is getting ready to dump him, but he won’t allow it.

Right before Kyra is murdered, Maureen begins to receive troubling text messages. Are these messages from a spirit that Maureen saw the day Kyra was killed?

Conclusion

I don’t want to give too much away, because I truly feel this film is a little gem that must be enjoyed with an opened mind. Kristen Stewart is an absolute joy in this film and her acting ability shines brightly. She’s received lots of flak from her “Twilight” fame, but I doubt that it was her acting that was the blame. An actor has to work within the confines of a script.

Personal Shopper is a ghost story at its simplest form, and I should know. I see ghosts all the time. The many scenes where Maureen is interacting with spirits are definitely true to form, and close to what ghost investigators and Mediums experience in real life. Spirits are pure energy and it takes a lot of energy for the dead to make themselves seen and heard. The sounds, the cold air, and the flashes of a form taking shape…these are all accurate. Ghosts don’t just pop up. It takes great effort for them to lower their vibrations in an attempt to make contact. There are two scenes in particular that show what a spirit is capable of doing when the energy is strong enough.

Although the director, Olivier Assayas, tries to say that it was all in Maureen’s mind, I beg to disagree. Not everyone can make contact with a spirit and, spirits know who can communicate with them. It’s like we psychics and mediums have a beacon on our heads. Ghosts know where to find us, and believe me; they will do everything in their power to make their presence known. Maureen wants proof of an afterlife and she gets one. She gets her answer through disembodied thumping. It takes two to make a haunting real.

See the film. You’ll like it. You can watch it on demand.

Nice recap, Marie. I can’t wait to see it. Do you ever see pets, too, or just people?

I do see animals if there energy is high enough. I know that my cat who passed away years ago, still drops in. My dogs know when he is there
