Gilbert Speaks on “Fear the Walking Dead” S03 E04

21 Jun

On last week’s episode of “Fear the Walking Dead” Daniel and Strand are together again. But how did Daniel survive that fire and, how did he wind up with Dante? Find out after the jump.

When the apocalypse begins, and it will, it won’t have anything to do with heaven. It will erupt when the wicked take total control of our food and water. If you can’t afford their ridiculous prices, then you will die. Now, ask yourself who owns the water in America. I’ll give you a hint, a foreign corporation…called Nestle.

Daniel is this episode is in dire need for water. He is badly burned and just about making his way through the streets of Tijuana. Daniel barely escapes becoming a walker mid-day snack, but luckily a barking dog distracts the munching dead.

Sometimes, you find the nicest people in the world’s underbelly. Daniel is rescued by Efrain. This stranger didn’t have to save Daniel, but he did, proving that the parable of “The Good Samaritan” is something we should all strive to imitate. Efrain then plops Daniel onto his rickshaw bike and takes him inside a little shopping mall. Daniel will die without water, but Efrain tells him that the water fountain in the center of the building dispenses miracles each week. Efrain then reveals the fountain’s secret. Every Tuesday at exactly 5pm, the waters flow like a miracle. We later learn the source of the weekly miracle.

Daniel’s burns are infected. Efrain knows what will happen if the wounds are not cleaned, but there is water to be delivered to the townsfolk in hiding from Dante and his men. After delivering water to the thirsty people who can’t afford Dante’s high rates, Efrain takes Daniel to see Lola. It’s hard enough being a patient in a sterile burn unit, so imagine Daniel’s situation. Lola needs to remove the charred skin with a knife if she wants to save his leg.

As Daniel slowly heals he learns that Efrain is a good man who prays for each walker’s soul before killing them. There is no way that Daniel can repay this man. He has no money…nothing to barter…but he is a barber, and Efrain needs a decent haircut.

I don’t know how Daniel escaped the fire. I know he tells how on the episode, but he has to have an angel watching over him. After Daniel heads out of his own to find his daughter, he escapes a walker via bolt of lightning! Daniel meets up with Lola again when he’s washed up into a storm drain. Lola works for Dante, and her job is to remove the dead from the water supply. She is also the miracle worker who diverts some of the water to that little water fountain.

We’ve forgotten that Daniel was a bad man before opening up his barber shop in LA. He is a killer, and don’t ever forget this because his loyalty to you depends on how it affects his survival. While eating in the cafeteria, one of Dante’s men sticks his finger into Daniel’s food. Not a smart thing to do, but the scuffle catches Dante’s attention. He recognizes Daniel from the fearsome El Salvadoran Military. He offers Daniel a job. Daniel accepts if he gets a jeep with the deal.

So what is the job? Daniel and Dante’s posse are trying to locate the illegal water source. Just like Nestle’s CEO, Dante thinks he has the right to control the water supply. Daniel betrays Efrain, but tells Lola that he did this for her. He then begins to brutally interrogate poor Efrain. In a strange series of events, and before Lola, Efrain, Pablito and Strand can be tossed over the dam; Daniel goes postal on Dante and his men. Daniel’s plead for forgiveness is answered by Lola.

This episode wasn’t the best episode so far, but it was the most important because it reminds us just how valuable water is. We need to ask ourselves this: Do we want foreign corporations owning our drinking water?
