Gilbert Speaks on Netflix’s Santa Clarita Diet E01

I absolutely adore Drew Barrymore. Maybe it’s because she reminds me so much of my daughter. They could pass for twins in both looks and attitude. You can imagine my excitement to learn that Drew was in a Netflix series called Santa Clarita Diet. I watched the first episode to get a feel of the series. Did I like it? Grab yourself some raw meat and find out after the jump.

“So Then a Bat or a Monkey”

Santa Clarita Diet was created by Victor Fresco and stars Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant as Sheila and Joel Hammond. They are real-estate agents who live in the suburbs of Southern California. They have a teenage daughter named Abby (Liv Hewson). Their neighbors on both sides of their property are cops.

While Sheila and Joel are trying to sell a family one of their listings, Sheila begins to barf. This is no simple stomach virus, but projectile vomiting that would put even little Regan from “The Exorcist” to shame. When the emergency room takes their time treating her, Sheila and Joel go home.

Sheila is suddenly feeling frisky and into oral sex, which her husband performs on demand. Sheila is also into raw ground meats. Without a pulse, heartbeat and red uncongealed blood running through her veins, the family soon realizes that they are dealing with a zombie. This diagnosis is confirmed by the nerdy teenager next door.

When Sheila kills, then feasts on an obnoxious co-worker (Nathan Fillion), Joel has to find a way to keep her voracious hunger satisfied.

I never judge a series by its first episode. But this series could be, if handled right, a great “what if there was a funny side to being a zombie” moment for all the serious zombie films and series out there like “The Walking Dead

There are ten episodes featured on Netflix and I will give my final opinion after watching them all. If nothing else, I get to enjoy watching Drew Barrymore.
