On this S02 E04 episode, Charlie is home with his family. Can he readjust to the “normality” of living in a fish bowl? Jennifer is watching the Bowmans for any clues that can save her job. Have you’ve ever wondered what life would be like under the rule of a totalitarian state where you are spied on around the clock? Meet me after the jump.

Panopticon

Tonight’s episode brings home how suppressive a civilization can be when it spies on its citizens around the clock. What is panopticon and what does it have to do with tonight’s episode? A French philosopher, Michel Foucault wrote a book, Discipline and Punish, about an experiment he did to examine the effects of surveillance on society. He used a prison which allowed guards to observe all of the inmates from a central tower surrounded by a large wall.

The experiment showed what happens to a society when they think they’re being watched at all times. Even though the prisoners never know exactly when the anonymous “eye in the sky” is on them, they have to always be on their best behavior. Similar to Colony, there is no interaction with those behind the surveillance, and the fear of punishment leads to a culture of self-discipline.

Colony, although a science fiction series, has proven itself to be more of an indicator of where this country is headed if the American people don’t remain vigilant in keeping a strong reign on the present administration…or any administration to be exact. Is Big Brother spying on you as you read this review? This is why I am connecting with and enjoying the show as much as I am. The scripts are top of the line as are the actors.

Charlie

This series has its own wall that keep its citizens divided from each other and trapped in servitude. Charlie has been rescued and returned home, but it’s going to take a lot of healing to make him forget what he experienced with Solomon.

Although it’s not verbally said, I feel the boy may have also experienced sexual abuse under the crime lord and his parents are not trained in the healing care that is required. Little Gracie’s adoration of her older brother does help somewhat, but that kid may know more about the world than his parents right now…this may be why he’s hording food.

Jennifer

Everything that is said or done in the Bowman home is being recorded and watched by Jennifer McMahon. The Bowmans are not aware of this and have unfortunately spilled the beans on Katie’s involvement with the Resistance and Will’s admission of murdering the Resistance leader to save his wife.

Jennifer is not a bad person, and Kathleen Rose-Perkins has done a wonderful job in making us care for her character. Jennifer has become part of the Bowman family through the many hours of spying on the family. She is in love with Will and looks upon his family as hers, but now her job and her life are on the line. The emotions on Jennifer’s face when Will tells Katie that he can use Jennifer even though she is weak, is heartbreaking. What did Jennifer ever do to Will except be loyal to him?

Conclusion

This episode revealed that Helena’s position as the Governor General of the LA bloc is just as much on shaky ground as the Bowmans and Jennifer. The Global Authority is not happy with the recent events at the LA Bloc and Helena’s suggestion for total rendition is shot dead in the water. Where is the Global Authority located? I wasn’t sure.

While the Bowmans try to adjust to Bram’s stint at the labor camp and Katie’s betrayal, Charlie decides to start a bonfire using Lindsey’s bible. I love this kid. The fire alerts Will that they are being watched.

Jennifer has to make a decision; betray Will or spend her life in the basement trolling through endless surveillance videos of the people in the bloc. Detective Burke and her boss Dan Bennett have threated this punishment many times. Jennifer takes the high road as we all knew she would do. While watching a video of her beloved husband and their former lives together, Jennifer drinks a glass of wine and begins to swallow pills. You will be missed Jennifer.
