Review of “I Origins”

How many times have you heard people say, “The eyes are the windows of the Soul?” Is this true? Not only do I believe that the eyes tell all, but I have learned through personal experience that I am able to get a good read on a person by looking at his or her eyes. Is it because I have psychic abilities? Maybe, but I think it goes deeper than that. My father, who owned a small grocery store in South Philadelphia, was also a good judge of character. He could spot a loser right away. All he had to do was look into the customer’s eyes.

 Plot

What exactly do the eyes reveal? You have to know what to look for. I’ve been told too often to count that I have an old soul. People tell me they can see this in my eyes. Since I also believe in reincarnation, “I Origins” was right up my alley.

This is a 2014 science fiction drama written, directed and produced by Mike Cahill. The film premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. It won the Best Feature Length Film Award at the Festival Internacional de Cinema Fantastic de Catalunya on October of 2014.

A graduate student, Ian Gray (Michael Pitt) is researching the evolution of human eyes with co-scientists Karen (Brit Marling) and Kenny (Steven Yeun better know for his role as Glenn on “The Walking Dead“). His purpose is twofold: set up a global identification system; discredit the creationists’ belief that eyes have not evolved. Ian, Karen and Kenny have scanned millions of eyes from around the world, then matched the eyes with their owners into a computer base, much like the fingerprint data base of law enforcement agencies.

Through flashbacks we learn about Ian’s first love, Sofi (Astrid Berges-Frisbey) who was killed in a freakish accident. We also learn about Karen’s scientific breakthrough  when she discovered that although a species of worm-Eisenia Fetida– was blind, it carried the gene to develop eyes. Ian and Karen are now married and have a son, but they discover a shocking fact. Someone with the exact eye identification as their son is also in the computer. What does this mean? What are the implications of this discovery? Ian tracks the down the owner of the eyes and it’s a man who died right before Ian’s son was conceived. Was this a case of re-incarnation?

Further searches into the iris database reveals another discovery that leads Ian back to India and to a little girl named Salomina (Kashish). She turns out to be the re-incarnation of Ian’s beloved Sofi. Ian is forced to admit that he was wrong about the existence of God.

Conclusion

This film is a love story, but it is also a tribute to our quest to find the truth. Are we creations of evolution, or are we the children of a unseen God? Can God and Science be one and the same? Can God exist even if we don’t see him? This film did a great job of tackling the debate that rages on between creationists  and evolutionists. Can we believe in God and still believe in evolution? Why not? The Catholic Church has ruled that both theories can co-exist equally. GOD is capable of being both a scientist and a creator. It was great to see Steven Yeun outside of his Walking Dead role. Check out the film. I give it a four star rating.
